Homestyling: Beautifully Decorated Hall Tables

I love the look of an elegant little dresser or console table in an entry hall. Aside from being extremely functional, a hall table is also a perfect place for a gorgeous vignette display!

Here are a few ideas for creating a BEAUTIFULLY DECORATED HALL TABLE...

A large mirror or piece of artwork hung a few inches above the tabletop acts as a backdrop for smaller accessories, adding depth and interest to a decorative table setting.

Sculpture is a striking addition to a hall table vignette, as is a collection of unique and eclectic artwork.  The space becomes a mini showcase of the homeowner's personality and design tastes.

The repetition of colour, texture and pattern creates the appearance of thoughtful design, while decorative items arranged by height enhances a display's visual appeal.

A combination of period styles adds creative tension to an artistic vignette.  I love the mix of modern and neoclassical elements in this arrangement!

Family photos are a lovely way to personalize a front entrance.  Combined with a stylish colour palette of black, white and silver, the effect is one of simple and easy elegance.

Displaying items in an asymmetrical fashion looks amazing in an eclectic setting, while glass and mirrored surfaces instantly 'up' the glam factor of any hall display.

The addition of chairs or benches positioned on either side of a hall table visually extends the parameters of a decorative vignette.

A pair of tall, slender table lamps and a collection of crystal accessories are classic elements of a beautiful hall table display.  This stunning arrangement is definitely one of my favorites!

So tell me... do you have any beautifully styled vignettes in your home?

A utilitarian bookcase can be transformed into a beautiful and personalized display case for your most treasured possessions.  All it takes is a little thoughtful styling.

The space below illustrates the powerful effect of layering.  A desk placed directly in front of a shelving unit adds dimension, while artwork hung vertically on the face of the bookcase create a sense of height.  A generous use of white and pockets of empty shelving beautifully balance the overall display.

Patterned wallpaper provides a stunning backdrop in this classically styled bookcase.

To prevent the display from appearing too busy, use decor items in neutral tones mixed with a single accent colour, and allow each piece plenty of room to breathe.

A collection of plates add softness to the black books and dark accessories in this elegant built-in.  The repetition of marbled, brown pottery and small, wooden chests shape a cohesive and balanced display.

Vintage prints and old leather books mixed with shiny objets d'art give this bookcase a sophisticated, old-world feel.  Notice how the pieces vary in height, and are displayed in multiples of three to create a visually appealing vignette.

Stack books horizontally and vertically on shelves for added interest.  Layer small antiques, sculptural pieces and a few unusual statement pieces in an eye-pleasing arrangement to showcase your art and collectibles.

Lean artwork against the back of your shelves and add interesting decor accessories in front to create the illusion of depth.  Paint the interior of your bookcase in a dark colour for a dramatic effect.

Sort books by size and colour and display like-items together for a uniform and understated arrangement.  Consider installing a ladder on a sliding rod to access high shelves.

Display tiny collectibles in groups to prevent your bookcase from looking cluttered.  Express your unique personality and interests by introducing objects with a similar motif.  Notice the porcelain birds featured on each shelf.

I love the look of a beautifully decorated coffee table.  The living room is typically a more refined space in the home, and offers the perfect location for creating an elegant and sophisticated coffee table display.

(Tocar Designs)
The size of a coffee table will dictate the number of decor items one should display. To prevent a sense of heaviness, consider incorporating a few glass pieces in a larger decorative arrangement.

The Art of Creating a Decorative Vignette

A VIGNETTE by definition is 'a short impressionistic scene that focuses on one moment, or gives an insightful impression about a character, idea, or setting'.

When this concept is applied to the art of interior design, a decorative vignette is an opportunity to tell a story - your story.

In our home library, my love of art and literature is reflected in this simple arrangement of hardcover books, abstract artwork and a sculptural marble obelisk.  The asymmetrical configuration adds a modern touch to what is otherwise a classically designed space.

Many designers emphasize the importance of displaying objects in odd numbers, as this type of grouping is naturally more pleasing to the eye.  In this kitchen vignette, visual interest is further enhanced by introducing a variety of tones and textures.

Consideration to scale and composition provides a sense of balance in a vignette display. The small size of this accent lamp is in proportion with the delicate apothecary jar and miniature angel statue, while the generous use of negative space allows each object to breathe

In this corner vignette, the repetition of shape creates continuity and visual impact.  Books have been added to provide a consistent variation in height.  Black and bronze accents offer a welcome contrast to the primarily silver-toned design scheme.

Showcase like objects in a single colour to create an effective and dramatic display.  Graham Moss has designed this gorgeous vignette using a collection of delicate white porcelain juxtaposed against the powerful elegance of black and gold.

An artistic vignette is an opportunity to inject colour and pattern by choosing pieces that compliment the room's existing palette.  These creative canvases by Lulu & Drew add interest and personality without compromising the light and airy feel of the space.

David Jiminez has created depth and dimension by skillfully layering objects in varying shapes and sizes.  Fresh flowers introduce a natural element and soften the dominantly masculine lines of this bedroom vignette.

This lovely vignette by Maria Killam is a condensed representation of the room's overall design style.  A wonderful sense of movement and artist flow is accentuated by the soft shades of red and taupe found in the artwork and decor pieces.

This unusual and impressive vignette is layered in steps, cleverly drawing the eye through its multiple vertical levels.  It's a striking example of how to create dramatic impact by displaying objects in an unexpected way.

I hope these tips help you to design a beautiful VIGNETTE that appears polished, yet personal... cultivated, yet connected... and most importantly, is an artistic and authentic representation of who you are and what you love.
