It's quite a challenge to find unique decorating ideas for the holidays.  Especially with so many people entertaining over Thanksgiving, you want some decor that makes your home a little more memorable.  Here are some ideas that I hope are new to you!

GiveThanks Collection 2012 - free printables from TheTomkat Studio http://www.thetomkatstudio.com/thanksgivingprintables/
Choose an appropriate but non-traditional color palette.  Orange and brown is a classic for Thanksgiving, but how about white and brown.  It definitely lends your home a fresher look.  Click here to get these free Thanksgiving printables!
I love this handmade garland with a palette straight from nature. A little metallic paint and you can create a custom message. Learn how here

Simple Thanksgiving table

The pastel color palette on this table definitely makes it memorable.

Fall Porch

And yet another example of how unexpected color freshens up Thanksgiving decor.  I love the addition of the pink mums!  Without them it would be a pretty, but rather ho-hum porch.

Preparing your home for Fall

It's almost that time of year again! As much as I like fall, I'm sad that before we know it summer will be over. For some reason it didn't really feel like summer much this year. I know I'm probably alone in this, but I love heat and even humidity. With the odd weather on the east coast we only got short spurts of heat. The stores are slowly switching over to fall items and I thought I'd share some of the things I'm eyeing for a fall transition in our home!

Personally I don't consider summer over until the end of September. So I'll be waiting until then to implement some of these changes, but based on where you are you may be able to get started sooner.

Candles. Make a candle vignette for your dining room table.  Light them every night at dinner.  Have fun picking out some candles and holders you really love and love looking at every evening.  Unscented is best.  I place mine on a mirrored tray for added light.

Throws.  Nothing says comfy to me like a chunky wool or FAUX fur throw.

Textured pillows.  You don't really want to pile up the fuzzy pillows during summer, but fall is a great time to start putting out your textured pillows.  I've been wanting a mongolian lamb pillow for a while now.

Books Grab some books to curl up to! A Place Called Home is going to be released in  October and I think it's going to be a coffee table keepsake!  I love having some inspiration at my fingertips and curling up on the couch while sweetums watches TV.

Tom Scheerer Decorates is an absolute feast for the eyes.  I didn't want it to end and will be pouring over it often this fall and winter.  I'll be sharing more from it later.

Just a bit more inspiration before my favorite holiday...yum!

Love this combo of different leaves, seeds, and pumpkins.

Branches are always dramatic - in a good way

I also love white pumpkins.  Thanksgiving suffers from orange and brown overload sometimes

Everything home decor is warm mixed metals these days, so simply silver, copper, or gold leafing some stones, or painting pumpkins with a glitzy paint will add a lot of glam to your decor.

Getting cozy inside when it's stormy out...

As I'm sure you all know by now, here on the East Coast we are all bracing for Sandy to hit. Schools are closed, offices are closed, and transit is at a halt. There's no where to go but to stay home, and why not make it as cozy and comfy as possible?

I'd love to know where this house is

We were without power for a whole week this summer, so we're bracing for the worst this time, and have gathered up all of our candles and filled all of our pots with water.

Nothing says cozy like marshmallows and cocoa.

And of course, park yourself in front of the fire if you are lucky enough to have one...

How do you get cozy?

We spent the weekend in NYC where it was 77 on Saturday.  Now here in MD it's 56 and honestly feels even cooler.  The cloudy sky and yellow leaves only add to the atmosphere of fall.
