Necessary Nooks

Everyone needs a spot in their house where they can "get away" from it all. My favorite homes have little nooks and cranny's where you might not originally know what to do with the space, it may just become the perfect oasis!

Classic Chic Style with a Touch of Glam

While patiently waiting for Spring to arrive, I've been busy making a few small updates to my great room sitting area.

During a recent trip to HomeSense, I fell head over heels in love with these round mirrors.

The frames are made of delicate black and silver cut glass, and their round shape perfectly relates to the understated circular motif that already exists in the room.

This is my latest art project.  I added texture to a canvas with drywall compound, and shaded the background with the room's current wall colours.  A few simple, oversized branches and blossoms finish the piece.

It's definitely not a Monet, but, I think it adds a unique, personal touch to the room.

I also found two tuxedo-style accent cushions for my white leather side chairs.  I love the extra touch of glam they add to the space.

And finally, hidden on a clearance rack at Michaels, I found these pretty porcelain birds.  The cut glass pattern on their wings ties in perfectly with my new mirrors.  Happiness!

Even though these are small changes, I think they add a sense of cohesion and flow, and are in keeping with my Classic Chic design style.

Most importantly, my new decor accessories make me happy, and for me, that's what decorating my home is all about!  As an added bonus, they were purchased on gift cards I received for Christmas which means I didn't spend a single dime!

8 Ideas for Adding Classic Style with Sculpture

Sculptural busts and figures have been an integral part of classic decor for centuries.  A beautiful piece of sculpture adds instant character, dimension and interest, and when artfully displayed, makes a striking design statement.

A home library is a natural location for showcasing artwork.  This large scale bust offers a stunning contrast to the graphic window frames and cleverly draws the eye through the room to the view beyond.

Matthew Patrick Smyth has created a masterpiece of light and shadow by layering handsome sculptures on heavy, wood columns against a simple, mirrored backdrop.  The skillful application of balance and symmetry adds a sense of formality to the space.

A stately roman statue enhances the neo-classical design of this museum-inspired sitting area.  A second oversized bust finished in a teal glaze softly repeats the accent colour in the room, offering an unexpected modern aesthetic.

The soft silhouette of a Greek Goddess blends harmoniously with the beautiful architecture in this elegant and eclectic dining space.  Its generous height is a perfect compliment to the room's soaring vertical lines.

(via Decor Pad)

Carolyne Roehm has introduced two miniature busts to emphasize the classic style of this gracious front room.  Small replicas of sculptural art pieces are an inexpensive way to introduce a sense of history into a traditional design plan.

A small scaled body sculpture is juxtaposed against a tall, modern pedestal, creating an interesting level of dimension in this edgy and elegant space.  An abstract canvas and two lacquered horse figurines add to the room's highly unusual art collection.

The regal presence of a grand art sculpture articulates the impressive atmosphere in this well appointed library.  Gorgeous antique furniture pieces add substance and character in keeping with the room's period style.

(Barrie Dixon)

With options available at a variety of price points, the integration of sculpture in a home is an elegant, and affordable design choice.

Consider adding an element of history to your decor with a classic art sculpture that beautifully conveys your own personal sense of style.

I love the idea of a long wall or hallway dedicated to the display of beautiful photographs or artwork.

The repetition of black, white and gold creates a gallery-inspired setting in this modern living room.  Stark white walls enable the sketches to hold the space with their quiet presence.

Charles Spada has expertly designed a stunning art vignette, adding a sophisticated layer of dimension to this glamorous interior.

Simple, horizontal picture rails allow frames to lean against the wall, providing the option to easily change or update the collection of personal photos on display.

Successfully hanging frames in varied sizes requires a keen eye.  This picture gallery exemplifies the mastery of perfect balance and proportion.

Utilizing the power of negative space, this designer has skillfully arranged a cohesive and eclectic composition of sculptural pieces and framed artwork.

Floor space is employed to house the overflow of this homeowner's collection, instilling the charming atmosphere of a working art studio.

The arrangement of this staggered art cluster is dictated by the sweeping contour of the staircase,  creating an impressively complex and striking feature wall.

A series of architectural prints line the full expanse of this hallway, deftly repeating the scale and design of the surrounding wall mouldings.

A personalized wall gallery is a beautiful way to showcase your collection of art or photographs, and when careful consideration is given to scale, colour and composition, the result is certain to be nothing less than picture-perfect.

Appreciating Art from the Inside Out

Great ART speaks your language, echoes your emotions, touches your soul...

ARTWORK is an expression of personal creativity.  My paintings are displayed throughout our home, this particular canvas being a family favorite.

An incredible piece of ART deserves a place of honour in a room.  The furniture and accessories should enhance it's beauty, without competing for attention.

Well chosen ARTWORK breathes life into a space;  a discernible energy, molded by magnificent waves of colour and light.

A canvas painted with fluid layers and contrasting depth infuses a space with movement and light.

A truly extraordinary piece of ART appears multidimensional, evoking a sense of oneness with the painting.

A single, over sized canvas is powerful and provocative, and when properly showcased, becomes the personality in the room.

ARTWORK creates drama, stirs deep emotions and memories, and captures the essence of the artist's intent.

ART draws the eye through a space, stimulating a curiosity for deeper exploration of what lies beyond.

With its amazing ability to tell a story,  ARTWORK fuels the imagination with fantasies of seductive tales, secretly hidden within its depths.

Do you own a special piece of ART that speaks to your soul and touches your heart?

The Keys to Creating a Home Library

BOOKS can be a source of entertainment, a resource for information, or a doorway to another world.  They can enlighten, educate and inspire.   BOOKS are incredible treasures.

For those who love and cherish the written word as I do, a home LIBRARY, however small, is as much a necessity as it is a luxury.

In my home LIBRARY, I started with the basic staples;  a comfortable reading chair, good lighting, and a cabinet to house (a small portion of) my BOOK collection.

Artwork, silk draperies, and a cozy throw in serene shades of french blue, set the mood for a few stolen moments lost deep inside the pages of a favorite novel.

In this well appointed LIBRARY, the extensive collection of BOOKS are displayed behind glass, their leather covers protected from dust and sun damage.

This home LIBRARY is anchored by a pedestal table, offering an additional surface to display BOOKS and sculptural accessories.

A LIBRARY can be easily integrated into an existing home office.  The eclectic mix of furnishings and artfully displayed collections add to the exotic elegance of this space.

These BOOKS have been wrapped in white linen, creating a cohesive colour scheme in this sophisticated space.  The display is primarily decorative, as the covered spines prevent one from perusing the BOOK titles in search of that perfect 'read'.

BOOKS are stacked and displayed amongst family pictures throughout these charming built-ins, adding warmth and personality to the landing in this beautiful home.

BOOKS are as priceless as any fine work of art.  Write them into your own design story, and embrace the warmth and richness that they will undoubtedly add to your home.
