Light Bright Kitchen

Friday, March 27, 2015

Light and bright does not mean you have to do head to toe white! If you are looking for a nice bright kitchen without it being completely whitewashed, here's a little inspiration that can help:

Ilot central, carreaux de ciment, chêne clair, fenêtres arrondies... and so on...

A light natural wood will never steer you wrong! It goes great with the light and airy feel and looks clean too.

Not into wood? A simple gray or tan can keep your kitchen nice and bright and pair's nicely with white accents for a timeless feel.

If you are dying for a little color stay on the pale end of things. this light blue is almost white but it's not! Paired with white upper cabinets and a blue back splash make this kitchen feel colorful, light, and airy.

If you have more of an eclectic style you can use a variation of different natural hues that tie together to complete that bright kitchen you desire.

If dark hues are more your style, go big on lighting and natural lighting. Nothing is brighter than the sun!

Make Up and Space

My morning routine isn't anything special but I'm thinking of changing that.

I'm trying to decide if I'd like it in my bathroom or somewhere else.

Unfortunately I don't have the space to make it an entire room, but I would if I could!

Sneak Peek: A Chicago Apartment with a Sartorial Approach. "There’s something about the routine of sitting down and taking time to get ready that seems so glamorous. I had my dad spray paint a plain white Ikea Malm dressing table a high gloss gray then paired it with this fabulous brass mirror from CB2 – such an unexpected find!" #sneakpeek

I like something like this that is subtle so if it is in my room it wouldn't stand out or look messy.

Do you have a dedicated space to get ready?

Why I Love Plantation Shutters

If you are looking to change out your blinds, you might want to take a look at plantation shutters. There are many reasons to love them:

Don't make the mistake of thinking they are just for the outdoors! Although they look fantastic on this home, they have many other fantastic uses.

The are great for letting in natural light, but for the more private moments of the day they close tight so you'll feel safe and secure.

They are easy to clean, and let's be honest - they look gorgeous!

You can get them in any shape and size and you don't even need window dressings! They look gorgeous on their own.

They are energy efficient and you won't have to worry about them banging and clanging around on a  windy day.

They are even great on patios!

White & Wood

Although I have a love for a white crisp room, sometimes too much white can feel bland. So to add on to my love of white and neutrals, here's a great idea to give white rooms a little more character without taking away from the white.

Natural wood really adds some character to the white without taking away from the crisp clean look!

The Tunbridge Wells Shaker Kitchen

FREE IMAGES
Today I wanted to show you a Tunbridge Wells Shaker Kitchen that stands out to be a little different than the rest! With most Shaker kitchens, the appliances are hidden behind painted doors to give a simple natural feel to the kitchen, but in this one they are out for all to see. I feel like they did a great job making this one a little different for those who would rather the appliances be out in the open.

This kitchen is a mix of natural and contemporary but it feels so fresh!

I am not usually one for open cabinets but these cabinets under the barstool area really make for great home decor as well as extra storage where there normally wouldn't be!

They did a great job maximizing this small space. With a lot of people downgrading on square footage in this economy, keeping it simple and working with the allotted space really makes a difference.

They did a great job pairing these with great details like the countertop and farmhouse style sink. I also love that the pendant lights don't take away from the rest of the room but they bring a little character at the same time.

These hand painted cupboards stand out to me, they look amazing! I also love how they almost just blend in with the wall. It makes it feel like they don't take up much space and it looks so clean.

Going Grey

There's something to be said about the color grey, especially in a home setting. It isn't too feminine and it isn't to masculine. You can pair it with almost any color, and it leaves such a crisp clean look to it!  I'm a long-time fan, hubby is a little harder to convince.  He thinks it's boring...sigh...

In most cases, it goes great with keeping a room light and bright!

Make the most of a snow day with some of these projects

Four great ideas of things you can do to change your decor while your stuck inside (since we are snowed in with over a foot of snow here and it's still coming down!). Might as well have fun - and if you're like me I can only watch so much TV before I need to get up and do something!

1. Rearrange your furniture:
via BHG

I get so excited rearranging my furniture.  It is really refreshing and can make old things seem new again. It takes some trial and error to get things just right, and don't forget that you can "shop" furniture from the rest of your house!

2. Clean out your drawers:

Culinary Cleverness.  Small baking pans are just shallow enough to slide inside a desk drawer, and so perfect for avoiding clutter by keeping smaller office necessities from blending together in an useless pile.
via bhg

In your kitchen, bathroom, pantry, bedroom, and more! Clean out those drawers by creating three boxes: throw away, give away, keep. Sort your items and when you get to the keep, figure out if you have any good trays, shoe boxes, or containers laying around that would keep the items corralled.  It looks like the drawer above is using small jelly roll pans, which is really clever.

3. Make that gallery wall you've dreaming about

I like Design Crush's tutorial, but there are a lot of great ideas and step by step instructions online i you just search for something like "create your own gallery wall."  Even i you don't have all the art you want to use yet, gallery walls can be flexible and expand over time, or you can at least decide where you want it and start composing it in kraft paper.

4. Style Your Bookshelves

2 images via DesignSponge

You will be surprised how many compliments you get when you thoughtfully arrange your shelves.  Thinking of a bookcase or set of shelves as a composition really lets you show off your favorite accessories and books while also serving a purpose. I'm not going to lie, it's not always easy to strike that perfect balance, and you'll likely always be making little tweaks.  I would start by pulling a few images that I really like to use as a guide.  Next, collect the items that will be on the shelves.  You may have to omit some items or add some along the way.  You will want items with a variety of heights and widths.  Other than that, a lot of the process is just "feel."  Step back from the shelves from time to time to make sure you are happy with how your "composition" is taking shape.

Attractive flooring options when it's all about budget

First I'm amazed by carpet tiles - now I'm looking at vinyl tiles!? Now before you say "yuck vinyl" (because that was my first reaction) take a second look at some of the pictures below. Did you know there is such a thing as luxury vinyl tiles? I did not.

via Houzz

Believe it or not those gorgeous wood floors are tiled vinyl! My mind is officially blown! These water resistant floors are making a huge hit these days because they are so resilient and gorgeous at the same time. Durability is something everyone is looking for and these floors are just that.

We have vinyl in our home that I am ready to tear up the second we get a chance but replacing it with luxury vinyl tile flooring was something I hadn't considered before now.

These may be more of the vinyl tile look that you are familiar but there's an added surprise to this one above. They are grouted vinyl tile! This makes it even harder to tell apart from the real thing.

Bold patterned tile makes a statement in this light and airy kitchen. See more ideas for kitchen floors: http://www.bhg.com/kitchen/flooring/fresh-ideas-for-kitchen-floors/?socsrc=bhgpin042413patterntile=4

If you aren't a traditional floor person don't worry - they have some pretty cool designs, colors, and styles available for you to choose from. They are also stain resistant and don't fade so you won't have to worry about losing their color.

If you aren't falling in love with the vinyl flooring like I am, you  just might after you check out their prices! They are really budget friendly, which makes it hard not to add into my must haves for my home.  I would have to see and feel them in person first, before making a decision, and learn about their VOC outgassing, but they definitely look good!  Does anyone have any experience with these?
