Inspiring ways to use moulding

We all probably know it it the details - the icing - that makes a place feel really special.  Unfortunately a lot of details can be costly undertakings for the average homeowner.  It was the photo below that got me thinking about different ways you can use crown moulding to fake otherwise expensive architectural elements or details...

A very thorough DIY on how to fake cabinets that go to the ceiling with moulding. This is probably more involved than most projects but what an impact it makes.

I don't have hollow core doors like the ones above, mine are the standard white contractor doors, and I'd love to come up with a way to make them look as nice as Pretty Handy Girl did...

Keeping Rooms Bright with Dark Paint

FREE IMAGES In the past, I have always gravitated towards white interiors, but more and more I am being drawn to dark, luxe colors. I still need some light though, and there are a few tricks to using a dark color and still having the room feel bright and spacious.

Using light colored fabrics and upholstery are a nice and soft contrast to the dark walls. They also reflect the light that's coming in from the windows which keeps the room from not having any depth.

Consider sheen and patina too.  Metallic gold bookcases reflect light.  Also consider the "visual weight" of your furnishings. The desk, while large - has minimal visual weight because it is clear.  A thick blocky wood desk would add a lot of visual weight to the room.

Here is another example of using light (in both weight and color) textiles, and reflective surfaces. Getting a semi-gloss or gloss paint will reflect light.

I actually think that small spaces done in dark colors feel extremely rich.  The herringbone floors, moulding, and large window don't hurt either!

I love a room that can entertain! The way they created multiple seating spaces in this room still keeps the extra large feel but makes it very homey. The rug also helps separate the room a little bit without taking away from those gorgeous floors.

The wallpaper in this room modestly luxe. I love the way it is just a hint of color so it doesn't distract too much from the rest of the room but it gives it that something extra. I also love the dark furniture to give it some contrast.

Picking out great furniture for your room ins't always easy but in this room above it looks well thought out, but not like it's trying too hard. I love the mix and match quality of it but it still looks put together really well.

The walls in this room are amazing! I absolutely love the historical touches and how the furniture doesn't take away from it at all! They stuck with the same three colors throughout and it looks amazing.

The room above is gorgeous! I love the neutrals and the elegant layout but my absolute favorite part of this room is the subtle color they brought in with the rug and bedding! This is a fantastic way to add a little color in a room as well as a pattern!
