Walls that Make A Statment

Lately my eyes have been drawn to some great rooms that are making a statement and I am loving it! Whether they are bold, classy, or just downright elegant, it is nice to see someone take a chance and make something beautiful out of it.

This wallpaper would not be an immediate first choice for me but it definitely does make you stop and stare! Seeing it in this room really makes me love it more!

A wall of windows is always eye-catching. The bold choice of black makes it stand out even more and I think it was a great choice.

Another non traditional wall paper in a room you wouldn't expect! Since bathrooms are small I tend to do with less is more in these areas but since the wallpaper has a lot of white space it really works here! I also like the simplicity of the color scheme.

Upholstery tacks are often seen on furniture, seeing it as a wall decor statement is something I've never considered.

Wouldn't it make Mondays a little easier?  I sure think so!

What a great way to start the day than with a shower that would definitely wake me up and put in the right mood for the rest of the day... there is also nothing better than a shower after a hard day working at the farm!

No matter what your design style is, a luxury shower can fit right in! What would you want in yours? Windows, raining shower heads, a bench?

New and pretty ways to use and hang your curtains

I saw this picture the other day and it made me think that there are probably a lot of other cool uses for curtains and drapes other than just hanging them in your windows.  Have you ever used drapes in a non-traditional way?
We have a heat pump in our bedroom, and I was thinking a treatment like the one above might be a nice way to hide it without impairing it's ability to function

No budget for that glamorous 4 poster or canopy bed?  Try installing drapery rods on the ceiling above your bed.

This is a great idea for corner windows. Instead of pulling them away from each other, tucking them together in the corner.

This room has a gorgeous tropical feel. The trunk, the rattan, the bedding, the wood mirror, and the sheer drapes all have that vacation feeling!

Here are some rooms I am loving these days. A touch of color, great windows, natural light, and a feeling of ease and comfort that makes you want to stay for a while.

Choose a Sunny Palette Crisp whites combined with punches of bright colors immediately transport you to the coast. In this living room, aqua accents in the pillows, throw, and rug mimic the ocean’s dazzling blues, and the pops of bright orange are inspired by the magnificent hues of the setting sun. Whitewashed horizontal shiplap planking evokes the feel of old Gulf-front beach houses.

Windows That Make A Statement

The right windows can make a room feel warmer, cleaner, larger, or more luxurious! Natural light gives a room something most indoor lighting can't match.  I appreciate natural light most in the morning, when it makes waking up a little brighter, and in the evening when it fills the house with golden light. Check out the windows that are making a statement in these rooms:

A sunny oasis! All that natural light really makes you want to get up and make the most of the day.

I love this little nook of windows. A great space for a little kitchen table or maybe even a great book and a comfy chair!

Non traditional windows really give the room a modern, or historical look. This room feels so grandiose and industrial chic with floor to ceiling windows.

I love the detail in these windows. This is a great mix of historical and modern. Such a unique decorative touch.

Letting Light In! Beautiful windows and natural light-filled rooms

It seems like the rain has set in these past few days and it can really make a day seem dreary. Even my dog is getting stir crazy from not going outside as much.  I thought that maybe some window and natural light eye candy could help brighten up the mood a bit.  After all, I've never hear anyone say "my home has too many windows - they make too much natural light!"  If I ever heard someone say that, I might have to slap them - and you should too.  (Sorry, I guess all the rain has gotten to me...)

Most people consider energy savings the primary benefit of replacing windows, and while it is a tremendous benefit, you'd be amazed at what a new window, like coral windows, could do for your space! Enlarging a window or adding one where there once wasn't can really transform the entire room.  The windows in the front of our house are wide, but barely 2 feet tall, so sometimes it makes me feel like we are in a basement or the lower floor of a split level.  I would love to replace them with taller windows - I know it would make the front rooms feel much larger!

I use a sunlight lamp in the winter when we have shortened days, and it makes a tremendous difference in my mood. It's no substitute for the joy you get when you step outside on a gorgeous bright sun shining day, but it's better than nothing, and I imagine that upgrading your windows to let more light in will only help as well.

Unfortunately, we don't all have the budget to replace our windows for the much needed luxury of light. There are certain tricks you can employ that don't cost as much as windows.  I would try using a slightly glossier paint in your rooms (keep in mind that the glossier the paint, the more defects will stand out in your walls).  Also, consider painting your ceiling in a high gloss or metallic paint - it really makes the light bounce!

We all know the trick of using mirrors to make a room feel bigger, and remember that mirrors also reflect light! Using a mirror on the opposite side of a window can create illusion of more light! Also avoiding heavy fabric curtains, and make sure they are hung so you can pull them back all the way from the frame of the window.

Living Room Must Haves

Thursday, September 12, 2013

Our living room is the first thing one sees upon walking through our front door. Since moving in in June, we've made some progress making it ours, but it's slow going since we're still trying to decide exactly what it is we're going for. We have a small sofa now, which I like, but I've been considering a sectional because our current sofa isn't really comfortable for those late nights snuggling on the couch. I used to not like sectionals at all, but more and more you're finding them in smaller sizes with cleaner lines.

 Love that coffee table too!

Some of my favorite sofas are the ones that look clean and modern but still have a great comfort factor!

I've also been faithfully searching craigslist every day for a worn leather chair.  I think they're so beautiful!

A coffee table that is both useful and stunning is another must have, though we've been living without one for 3 years, so I guess they're more like a "should have". I've been looking out for one that I like for a while now.  A coffee table is something you don't need to splurge on, and there are so many creative ways to create your own coffee table.  Just search on google or pinterest "DIY Coffee Table" and you'll see hundreds of ideas returned!

Lighting is also extremely important. A lot of natural light is ideal but unfortunately might not be a reality for you. Since the living room is the main gathering room at most homes, you want it to be the most well lit when occupied, so make sure you have plenty of lamps.

Overhead lighting makes me sad.  Table lamps are pretty and cast a more relaxed glow so use those on end tables instead, or place a floor lamp behind a couch for the nights you curl up with a book.
